William A. Fraser Middle School Releases “Connections Matter” Community Video Project
William A. Fraser Middle School is proud to announce the release of the “Connections Matter” Community Video Project. The project was led by Mr. Leeman’s Grade 8 class and supported by the Falcon Equity League, which includes Grade 6, 7, and 8 students. The project reveal saw an impressive turnout, with many guests attending the school's reveal event on June 12, 2024.
The initiative focused on capturing and sharing personal reflections and advice. Participants, including students, school staff, community members, and notable guests such as Sean Nosek, Superintendent of Schools, Ross Siemens, Mayor of Abbotsford, Inspector Crystal Jacks from the Abbotsford Police Department, and several others, shared messages to their future and younger selves, fostering thoughtful self-reflection and connection across generations.
"The ‘Connections Matter’ Community Video Project is a testament to the power of unity and shared experiences within our school community,” said Ian Levings, Principal of W. A Fraser Middle School. “By bringing together students, staff, and community members to reflect and share their advice, we are not only strengthening our bonds within the school but also extending these connections beyond our walls. This project highlights the importance of respect, compassion, integrity, and perseverance, and it is my hope that it will inspire others to see the value in every individual’s story and the strength of our collective community.”
The project encouraged participants to share advice to their past and future selves. With over 200 entries, the students and teachers carefully reviewed and selected the most impactful pieces to create two videos. The advice ranged from doing what makes you happy and always being kind to others to not spending too much time playing video games. Many speakers emphasized character traits such as perseverance, hard work, and kindness.
“Before middle school, I never really knew what character meant and why it mattered so much,” reflected Isaac, a Grade 7 Fraser Middle student. “But with the help of my teachers and this project, I have realized that doing the right thing, for the right reasons, even when no one is watching, defines my character.”
Close to 100 students from Grades 6 to 8 took on a variety of roles. They were involved in everything from supporting filming, appearing on screen and speaking at the event to guiding guests, performing in the band, and welcoming visitors. Throughout the year, the Connections Matter project became a central focus for the entire school.
The “Connections Matter” Community Video Project exemplifies William A. Fraser Middle School's motto of being a learning community that values respect, compassion, integrity, and perseverance. The initiative strengthened the connection between school, home, and the broader community and empowered students to reflect on their character and contributions to society.
