Leadership Updates in Indigenous Education

The Abbotsford School District is committed to investing in Indigenous Education, aiming to improve Indigenous students’ success, supporting all students in learning about Indigenous peoples, and helping teachers in their efforts to infuse Indigenous knowledge and perspectives into the classroom. To further this goal, the school district has invested additional roles and leaders in the portfolio.

Abbotsford Receives $1.9M From Province for One-Time Funding

(Abbotsford) — The provincial government is providing $60 million in one-time funding to school districts across the province to support families with back-to-school costs. Earlier this week, the B.C. government announced they are using funding from the Student and Family Affordability Fund toward back-to-school costs to assist families struggling with the rising cost of living due to inflation.

Three Abbotsford educators in running for Excellence in Education awards

Three Abbotsford educators have been named as finalists for the 2022 Premier’s Awards for Excellence in Education.

Joe Frew, a teacher at Terry Fox elementary, is a finalist in the category of extracurricular leadership.

Ian Levings, the principal of Eugene Reimer middle school, is a finalist in the “school leadership” category.

Nerlap Sidhu, a teacher at Eugene Reimer, is a finalist for social equity and diversity.

Abbotsford School District offers Summer Explorers Program

This summer Abbotsford School District again offered a K-8 Summer Enhancement Program called Summer Explorers which ran July 4-21 in 5 school stires around Abbotsford. This program is open to any interested students in Abbotsford and parents can register their children online on the school district website in May. This program aims to provide engaging opportunities for students to practice important literacy and numeracy skills while taking part in activities focused on exploration and inquiry about topics they are interested in.

Back to School Event

September can be a month of anxiety and stress for families as it presents the back-to-school season for children. On August 27th, the Abbotsford School District, in partnership with the Abbotsford Food Bank, Hope City Church, The Salvation Army Centre of Hope, and Relate Church, will host the 4th annual back-to-school event to support families in need. This event will provide each child with a backpack of school supplies, hygiene products, a hamper of dry goods, a hamper of perishable items and a $25.00 gift card for Superstore.

John Maclure unveils new Thunderbird Mural

In the fall of 2021, Carlos Julian, an Indigenous Support Worker at John Maclure Community School, emailed a local Indigenous artist in hopes that they would be able to paint a mural at the school in honour of their mascot, a Thunderbird. The artist's work captured Carlos' interest online for her colourful, bold and beautiful First Nations-style art.

When Carlos inquired with Chantelle Trainor-Matties, a visual artist from Abbotsford, about creating such a piece, he was intrigued by her response, asking if the school happened to be John Maclure Community School.

Students coordinate PRIDE celebrations at Eugene Reimer

Eugene Reimer Middle School's Inclusion Club hosted a Pride celebration for students and staff in June 2022. Students from middle schools across the district were provided with the opportunity to come together with like-minded individuals to socialize and create a community within Abbotsford to celebrate the Pride season.

Board of Education holds House Post Honouring Ceremony

On June 21, 2022, the Abbotsford Board of Education hosted a House Post Honouring Ceremony at Semá:th First Nation longhouse to formally commemorate the carving of three house posts created for the Abbotsford School District. School Trustees, district staff, students and various community members were in attendance to witness the honouring, a traditional and meaningful ceremony in Stó:lō culture.
