AP 311
Background
The purpose of this procedure is to ensure that all educational programs of the Abbotsford School District comply with Ministerial standards for the inclusion of students with disabilities or diverse abilities. The Ministry of Education and Childcare defines students with disabilities or diverse abilities as those who have a disability of an intellectual, physical, sensory, emotional or behavioural nature, have a learning disability, or have special gifts or talents.
Procedures
1. Inclusion means providing all students, including those with disabilities or diverse abilities, access to the same educational opportunities as their peers, with the necessary supports for success. It emphasizes acceptance, participation, and equity, ensuring every student feels a sense of belonging and can fully engage in the classroom and school. Inclusion goes beyond placement in general education settings; it ensures meaningful participation, positive interactions, and a supportive environment where diversity is celebrated and all students can thrive.
2. The inclusion of students with Ministry of Education and Child Care Inclusive Education designations in their classroom and school community will be supported by the school and district with resources appropriate to the individual student's needs, as outlined in their Individual Education Plan (IEP).
3. The school and district will provide learning environments that are appropriate for the needs of learners in the least restrictive environment. These environments may include:
• the regular classroom with support as needed,
• the regular classroom with pull out to other educational spaces when needed, or
• placement in a district program with appropriate classroom inclusion.
4. Each school will establish a School-Based Team (SBT) (see AP 207) to provide a supportive and consultative body within the school to assist classroom teachers in planning for the inclusion of students with disabilities or diverse abilities in their classroom and school communities, ensuring equitable access to learning, achievement and the pursuit of excellence in all aspects of their educational program.
